This mug of St. Jose Sanchez del Rio by René Martínez Valadez shows the young man praying the rosary and holding a palm branch, symbolizing the victory of his martyrdom. The sash around his body holds the words he spoke to his mother to convince her to let him join the Cristero war: "Never was it so easy to become a saint," and he went on, "I don't want to miss the opportunity". So, he went to war, and was martyred by the Mexican government at the age of 14.
The projected cross and lines are a cubist representation of Christ the crucified King and, at the same time, a gateway to holiness. The triangular crystal shapes represent the Trinity and the more spiritual part of the composition which José is crossing into.
The text reads:
"Saint Jose Luis Sanchez del Rio
BORN March 28th, 1913
MARTYRED February 10th, 1928
CANONIZED October 16th, 2016
O Saint Jose,
littlest soldier of Christ,
whose last bloody steps
brought you to the arms
of Our Lady and Our Lord,
keep healthy and strong
the steps of Our Lord's
soldiers who remain here
on earth, such that they may
have our strength to endure
and persevere to the end.
AMEN
VIVA CRISTO REY!"
