cloister-collection-official.jpgThis icon plaque, the Mother of the World by Franz Ittenbach, comes from the Cloister Collection, Catholic to the Max's exclusive line of wood slab icons.

The image shows Mary crowned as queen of all creation, seated upon a resplendent, jeweled throne. She is holding up the child Jesus, who is holding a globe, representing his absolute power over all the earth. By depicting Christ the King as a child, and Mary as the queen and his mother, Ittenbach is also pointing to Mary's motherhood over all the earth.

The artist, Franz Ittenbach (1813-1879) was a German painter from the Nazarene tradition. The Nazarenes were a group of painters that were known for their piety, modesty of dress, and commitment to making sincere, and morally beneficial religious art.
