In the image, Jesus' lifeless body has been taken down from the cross and is lovingly cradled by a pair of angels. The contrast in emotion shown by each angel is intended to demonstrate different modes of prayerful meditation on the Passion of Christ: one angel looks upon the Lord with tenderness and appreciation for His sacrifice while the other appears distraught at the horror and injustice of Jesus' death, averting his eyes towards heaven.

Francesco Trevisani was a Late Baroque painter during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He lived primarily in Rome and enjoyed the patronage of Cardinals and Popes in his day, often painting different versions of the same subject for various members of the Ecclesial families.
