This image by Thomas Cole depicts the scene in Matthew's Gospel following Jesus' 40 days of fasting in the desert and his victorious battle of the wills over Satan, after which the Evangelist records "behold, angels came and ministered to him."

Thomas Cole was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England, in 1801. His family emigrated to Steubenville, Ohio in 1818 where he first began to paint, inspired by the majestic beauty of the Ohio River and the then-untamed American landscape. In 1825, he moved to New York City where he helped found the National Academy of Design. He settled on Cedar Grove, a farm in Catskill, New York, where he married and had five children. Thomas Cole is most well known for his landscape paintings, but dabbled in historical and religious subjects as well, as seen in this inspiring work.

This moving depiction will make an excellent devotional aid for any Christian who wishes to meditate on Our Lord. Anyone can enter into the mystery of Jesus Christ through the beauty and practicality of this sacred art piece.
